summer/ autumn music

Lulu Rouge - intense Scandinavian electronic music for a late summer evening. Lovely! ‘Bless You’ is their debut album.

Sigur Rós - their latest album makes its promises of the previous releases more than true. It’s gorgeous again.

    This is SCHOOL

Cotton Candy Blue - Bridget (Ireland)

Cotton Candy Blue - Bridget (Ireland)

    Lovely concept, great design.

‘This is SCHOOL’  is a t-shirt that’s a counterpoint to all the negative sentiment the Beijing Olympics has been stirring up.  And it is also a reminder that the Olympics is all about UNITY, which the shirt shows by featuring every single competing nation in a yummy word track.

      International Youth Day 2008

YOUTH AND CLIMATE CHANGE: TIME FOR ACTION

Today is World Youth Day, a day that youth organisations and movements worldwide gather to take action and stand up  on climate change.

A major focus of the Day is practical action to further encourage the empowerment and participation of youth in the processes and decisions that affect their lives. The media have especially important role to play in support of the observance of the Day to promote public awareness of youth issues.

… or read the column by the Dutch UN Youth representative for sustainable development, Don Gerritsen, on climate change (in Dutch).

Read more about the recently held Tällberg Forum (an international conference for thinkers and leaders from seventy nations for four days of conversations and workshops related to the opportunities and challenges of global interdependence. Central and common question was ‘How on earth can we live together?’ The Tällberg Forum proposed a Call fopr Action for the EU to tackle climate change:

For the EU this is likely to mean a reduction of least 60% greenhouse gases by 2030 when compared to 1990 levels.

Could Globalization Be Going In Reverse?

For the last three decades, it’s been more or less assumed that globalization was a force that moved in only one direction — towards ever-greater integration.

And due to the logic of global trade, the assumption of ever greater integration led to the prediction that manufacturing would continue to move from countries with low labor costs to those with even lower labor costs and even looser laws, while supply chains would tend to grow ever-longer and more complex. The world would grow flatter.

So far, these predictions have held true, but will they always? For the first time in recent decades, it seems there are now real reasons to question the logic underlying the official future of ever-increasing global trade.

          The final countdown

Usually I’m quite an optimist when talking about future-related trends, how to act on climate change etc. But this article in The Guardian struck me quite a lot…

Time is fast running out to stop irreversible climate change, a group of global warming experts warns today. We have only 100 months to avoid disaster. Andrew Simms explains why we must act now - and where to begin.
